How a Doll Caused the Violation of a Man’s Human Rights

In early 2013, a package from Japan en route to a home in Newfoundland was intercepted by Canadian border officials. Local police conducted a “controlled delivery”, arresting Kenneth Harrisson as the package was delivered to his home. The box did not contain drugs or dangerous weapons, but a life-size doll that officials had determined was not of legal age. Harrisson was charged with possession of child pornography (more appropriately known as Child Sexual Exploitation Material or CSEM), mailing obscene material, and smuggling of prohibited goods. These events set in motion a trial spanning six years and raising the question “Can an image, or in this case an object, be considered…

Child-Like Dolls and Their Effects on Men

With the recent push to criminalize child-like sex dolls, a lesser known subcommunity among doll owners is being neglected. People choose to purchase dolls for a variety of reasons, and not all of them are inherently sexual. For example, the “reborn doll” community has been around for quite some time. Members of this community create or collect realistic infant dolls. It is common practice for doll artists to buy kits containing pre-molded vinyl doll body parts and then apply paint and hair before selling them to buyers. Completed dolls can be purchased in a variety of places such as eBay, Amazon, Etsy, or individual websites. Consumers of reborn dolls have typically…

    Pedophile Panic

When child sexual abuse became an issue of public concern in the 1980’s, people sought a villain to blame and a cause to rally against. This was to fight a problem that has existed for all time. The outrage settled on the occult, and the concept of satanic ritual abuse took off in the public psyche. This moral panic most famously lead to the McMartin preschool trial, where impossible and downright bizarre accusations made against the owners of a California day-care held enough credence to spark one of the most lengthy and expensive trials in U.S history. As the dust settles from the moral panic of the ’80s and ’90’s,…

On “Exploring the implications of child sex dolls”

Earlier this month, the Australian Institute of Criminology published a report in response to concerns surrounding the increasing numbers of what they refer to as “child sex dolls” being imported to Australia. When reading reports such as this, I try my best to remove my own vested interest from the equation and read it as someone lacking any knowledge or experience with child-size dolls. With this in mind, I can easily see the flow of logic as conclusions are drawn to the potential harms associated with these dolls; however, as an owner of several childlike dolls myself, I see one major flaw in this report that deteriorates the foundation on…

    Love doll, not sex doll

When you hear the term “sex doll”, what comes to mind? Most people envision something inflatable, intended as a gag gift, or a silicone doll with features exaggerated to impossible proportions. We call them sex dolls because that is what we assume they are intended for: created for sex and nothing more. When referring to small dolls, they are most often described as “child sex dolls” by politicians and media outlets. What do you think of when you hear that term? The addition of the word “child” stirs up a whole different set of emotions, and the snickering quickly turns to rage–but who decides when a doll becomes a child?…
